Surgery Rotation Reflection

During my surgery rotation I was on the B team of the general surgery teams. I was therefore primarily following a lot of hernia repairs as well as bariatric surgeries and got a more detailed understanding of the surgeries. During my 24 hour call, I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in an emergency surgery in which a very elderly man’s life was saved and I was able to remove a section of his colon during that procedure under the direction of the attending. It was an incredible experience to have been a part of. During my rotation, I rounded on a patient by myself every morning and presented it to the team during morning rounds. This experience allowed me to start to function more independently and less as a student, which is very important as I come close to graduating. I learned an incredible amount about procedures as well as patient care during this rotation and am very thankful for my experience.
