During my site evaluation in internal medicine, I presented three comprehensive history and physical examinations (H&Ps). The first HPI I wrote and presented after the first two weeks and the subsequent two I presented during the final week. Reflecting on the feedback I received, a key suggestion in my first site evaluation with Mr. Sadat, was to improve my treatment plan, which I think I was able to achieve more so on this rotation compared to others. I was able to also select patients with available results, so that I could analyze their imaging and labs and create a more detailed treatment plan.
Additionally, I also had the opportunity to delve into relevant research topics during my evaluation. I found that when I looked up diagnoses, treatment plans, or even just reminders of lab values, I was able to grow way more as a student. The extra time in the chart review that I was able to do during this rotation allowed me to do that and therefore I felt more prepared for my presentations than other times.
I also researched ten common internal medicine drugs, one of which was Tacrolimus, a transplant drug that prevents rejection. Given that so many of my patients were transplant patients, understanding the MOA, indications, and side effects of this drug in particular, really gave me an understanding of my patients before even seeing their past medical history. It showed me how drug cards can be used in the right way to further my knowledge.
Overall, my site evaluation experience was a great learning opportunity and showed my improvement as a student. By incorporating feedback and actively engaging with other students presentations, I was able to gain a lot from these site evaluations and enjoyed them.
